CINEMAtics   Back to Events

The evolution from a successful sound-system to an elaborate audiovisual project was the result of the many cinematographic experiences of both VJ Capt. Hypnos & vJean d’Anvers. Throughout our projects, CINEMATIC’s main theme has always been the strong and explicit interaction between sound and image.

Cinematics combines dance music with spectacular images, mixing 16mm, video, and computer formats. Silent films are mixed live in response to the music and audiovisual shows are built around certain themes and tailored for specific cities and countries.

Cinematics can also provide the music, with sets based around Nu Jazz, Nu Bossa, Trip Hop, Break Beats/Drum & Bass, Dub, Funk, Rap/Reggae, and Rare Groove.

Cinematics provides a flexible crew, tailored to a specific project and the expectations of the organiser. At our disposal we have filmmakers, VJs, DJs/scratchers, editors, camera-operators, musicians, actors and performers.

On several occasions, we have put on shows for Clifford Gilberto/Ninjatune London, for Spacer/Pussyfoot London, for Palmskin Productions/Mowax London, to name but a few.

Collaboration with Amsterdam-based collective, Pipslab, has led to a staggering evolution. With interactive tools and custom-built equipment, the shows have become truly revolutionary in the domain of interactive techniques. The results have been displayed several times at the Singel/Antwerp at De Nachten.

In Belgium, Cinematics has held residencies at Cybertheatre, Cactus, Recyclart, Café d’Anvers and has put on shows at Beursschouwburg, Halles, Vooruit, Athanor, Cinema Nova, and many other venues. At I Love Techno we played to an audience of 37,000 people - the biggest party event ever held in Belgium. Internationally we have played in Nantes, Berlin and Amsterdam.

In 2002, Cinematics held a series of clubnights at Recyclart/Brussels, Depot 214/Brussels, and Athanor/Brussels. We also payed at Vooruit/Gent, Halles/Brussels, Kunstcentrum/Hasselt, and were invited to Amsterdam’s biggest venue, Paradiso, to turn the place upside down.

Our most prestigious show was the opening of the Biennale in Venice, firmly establishing Cinematics as a leading force for audiovisual spectaculars on the international festival circuit.
